The Monadh Liath group of hills are a rolling landscape that does not contain any very memorable peaks. However, they are a vast area in which to feel a high degree of remoteness.

Misty in the morning but good visibility later in the day

Starting point : Glen Banchor car park

The Steve Fallon route was followed. After the initial track through the forest, indistinct and not connected paths lead to the top of A’Challeach with it’s large cairn on top. The route to the next summit involves a considerable drop and navigation across a deep ravine until a line of fence posts are reached leading to the second summit of the day, Carn Sgulain. The fence posts are key feature of a great portion of the rest of the walk but the distances between the peaks are big and it seemed to take a long time to get to the third summit of the day, Carn Dearg. This is situated on a branch out from Carn Ban. The route to the final peak, Geal Charn was long, flat and featureless so it was with great relief that we did not have to do this section in the mist. The descent was good until the forest was reached where the path made a very wet and boggy traverse to the finish at Garva Bridge. My bike had been left here so I set off back to the start with an an 18 mile bike ride back to the car.
